Meek Monday Meanings: IDOL

Habakkuk 2:18-20English Standard Version (ESV)

18 “What profit is an idol
    when its maker has shaped it,
    a metal image, a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
    when he makes speechless idols!
19 Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
    to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
    and there is no breath at all in it.
20 But the Lord is in his holy temple;
    let all the earth keep silence before him.

The issue of idolatry can be so subtle in our lives. I think many of us are actually idolatrous and are unaware, I pray we pause and evaluate ourselves. Even better than self evaluation, may we consult God to show us where we have misplaced our trust.

Habakkuk 2 gives us a picture of the futility of idolatry but also the nature of it. It says these graven images or idols were crafted or created by the maker themselves. The same person who intends them to work is also the one that makes it. For us this means things of our design, for example, my possessions, my balance, my fancy boo thing, my (fill in the blank of something in your life you think could fall in this category).

Its created in the sense that I would have set up an office for it to hold my trust. I give this thing my hope and I expect this “thing” to produce the outcome I want. The writer mentions asking the silent stone to arise and essentially have an input into their life. Let the money bring me status and power, let the boyfriend bring me completion/ fulfilment.

Now for the rude awakening,  the idol is lifeless and powerless and cannot truthfully inform their lives. It can only teach lies and therefore an idol would never be a teacher of truth. If I hold a boyfriend/friend or some object or gain as an idol it is therefore always going to be something that is a “teacher of lies” in my life.

God despises idolatry as He intended for us to look to him, to Trust in Him alone. But humans continue to be deceived by various “teachers of lies” Do a heart check today and hand over the reins, denounce any false gods in your life. Will you let go?

Behold the Lord your God is ONE!

Habakkuk 2 also states” Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it.” It could be tempting to put hope in the flashiness of having a million dollars or the gold embossed MK bags, or the status of having a significant other or climbing the ornate steps to a high employment status. The point is nothing is wrong with the gold and silver in themselves the issue is misplaced trust and source.  These things are not animate nor are they life-giving. God alone is the living God in his Holy temple and He alone should be on HIS throne. This throne was supposed to be made up of all of our hearts’

In the matter of my heart vs complaint towards God, I opt for silent trust.

But the Lord is in his holy temple;
    let all the earth keep silence before him.
