They were used in jewellery in Dominica and other parts of the Caribbean. The locals had all sorts of common names for these seeds some said they were “Jumbie beans” as if mystifying their use. Everything was an old wives tale on these forested tracks. Some of them believe that they were also placed in paraffin lamps maybe as a fuel for the flame.
As the campers ascended the hill I paused and stooped awkwardly to collect a few of the red and black seeds.I held them up to examine the exterior. As if the world had trambled on it and left it for dead. One had been bruised on a side revealing the tender innards.
As we continued ascending the hiking trail I remembered the seeds I had collected from a savannah walk a couple months ago.
I was first attracted to their vibrant shiny red coats but mostly I was fascinated by what happened to me as I held them. I collected a handful of these that day and thought of all the craft projects I could do. As I shuffled them in my hands I felt an indistinguishable pulse and as though an insect had flown on me. In my fright, my hand sprung open violently and I flung away all the seeds I had collected, scattering them all across the Savannah. Later I would realise what happened and have my suspicions confirmed as a similar thing happened at work with an office plant. It was the seed that had exploded in my hands. Who knew that some seeds were so explosive ? I had no idea even though I have been popping corn all my life. Yes, corn is a seed. As I thought about my two seed encounters I thought of Humans as seeds. God has planted us in his garden as seeds here on earth. What will we cultivate?
Some of the seeds planted within us are explosive seeds. These are the things that take radical faith to germinate. These are the plans that will be widely dispersed and would be far-reaching. If a seed were to fall so close to the trunk of another then they’d scarcely survive. The roots of one would not allow the other to take hold of the life-giving source. Or if some did thrive the population would not be able to spread as far and forever remain this dense cluster of the same trees.
A tree should not grow under the shadow of another tree, but in the exposure of the sun, near the richness of a body of water. Clinging soil and erupting forth from the depths of the earth.
I have felt like that bruised seed, one side of me untouched but on the other a bruised and exposed flesh. But God in his great mercy has assured me that wounds are healed in Him. He takes our wounds and he binds them. Bruising can be used in growth if we submit our hurts to Him.
If a seed never breaks out from its encasement how would it grow?
I believe that God is calling his seeds to erupt, to germinate, to grow in Him and produce fruit. Growth is painful while it is happening but if we are ever to walk in his will then life abundantly is the name of the day. Life abundantly suggests a position of harvest, of sowing and reaping, of growth. Many of us want to arrive but we don’t care for the journey. He is calling us into his will and it’s a straight and narrow journey of endurance. To sink deeper into his soil, to soak up his supply in our substance till we can no longer be called a seed. So that we would be transformed into a new form.
Planted, fruitful and deeply rooted to stand. What can thrive outside of the will of God?
Maybe you’re like me and you don’t fully know the type of seeds God has planted in your life. I encourage you to keep seeking HIM and they’ll: explode! Pray for the discernment and understanding to know how to allow yourself to be positioned for His use and to allow those seeds to explode, to germinate and populate your life with His purpose.
[For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him, By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones),Ephesians 1:17-18 AMPC
